The end of the school year is a busy time as it is — and locker management holds a special place on the list of headaches. Students who don't return keys, lockers left locked, damage discovered only when they're finally opened — all of these turn a simple process into a challenge. This guide will help you make the end of the year an orderly process.
Plan Ahead — A Month Before Year's End
Don't wait until the last day. A month before school ends:
- Send a first notice to students and parents with the locker return date
- Prepare an up-to-date list of all lockers and their owners
- Flag lockers already known to have problems
- Decide who is responsible for collecting keys and inspecting the lockers
Return Week
Set a dedicated return week with a clear schedule:
- Days 1–3: self-service returns — students empty their locker and drop the key at a collection point
- Day 4: first inspection round — check which lockers haven't been returned yet
- Day 5: send a personal reminder to students who haven't returned theirs
- The following week: open lockers that remained locked, with a witness present
Inspecting Locker Condition
Once a locker is returned, check that:
- The door opens and closes properly
- The lock works
- There's no damage — deep scratches, stickers, stains
- The locker is clean inside
Flag faulty lockers for repair over the summer break, so everything is ready when the new year starts.
Handling Common Problems
- A student lost a key: charge the parents for the cost of replacing the lock. Document the debt.
- A damaged locker: photograph the damage, document it, and notify the parents. Set a clear policy on charges.
- Forgotten belongings: collect items left behind, hold them for two weeks, then donate or discard them.
- A student who left mid-year without returning theirs: contact the parents. If there's no response, open the locker with a witness present.
Getting Ready for Next Year
Once all the lockers have been returned and inspected:
- Repair faulty lockers
- Replace broken locks
- Clean all the lockers
- Reset the system for the coming year
- Prepare a list of available lockers ready for assignment
